Orchid Fertilizer: Even Tough Guys Need Love

Orchids are not nearly as fragile and high maintenance as their reputation makes them out to be. But like all plants, they do need nutrients, and because household orchids are always potted in some type of container, those nutrients have to be added in the form of orchid fertilizer. Failure to apply orchid fertilizer properly may not kill your orchid, but it will keep it from growing vigorously and blooming to its full potential.

Nutrients

The primary nutrients used by all plants are nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) and potassium (K). Orchid fertilizer is sold in different formulations, described as a series of three numbers on the package, always in the order NPK.

During the colder months, use a formula with a higher percentage of phosphorous, which is important to producing blooms, such 10-30-20. Nitrogen is important to general growth and production of foliage, so in the warmer months when the orchid is producing new growth, use a balanced fertilizer, such as 20-20-20.

Types of Fertilizer

Orchid fertilizer can be purchased either as a liquid or in a solid, granular form. Controlled release forms can also be found. All of these types can be used for orchid fertilizer, and none have any particular advantage so long as you use them correctly.

It is critical to read and follow the package directions as overuse or incorrect use of orchid fertilizer can damage your plants. Since orchids can be grown in many different types of mediums, the form of fertilizer you choose will depend in part on how you pot your orchids.

Frequency of Feeding

Successful orchid growers recommend that orchids be fed regularly with a weak fertilizer. Feeding should be at least every two weeks, and preferably once a week. Keep the strength of the fertilizer weak, though, even if you miss a feeding.

Never double up the amount to make up for missing a dose of orchid fertilizer, as you will do more harm than good. It is generally agreed that regularity of feeding is much more important than the type of orchid fertilizer used.

Specific orchid fertilizer formulations can be found on the market, but any fertilizer will work if you follow the above guidelines. Every gardener has their favorite feeding regimen, and you should feel free to try different types and schedules to see what produces the healthiest plants for you.

Orchids are tough guys, but with the right love and care, they can thrive.
